Project Overview
Veza Sur Brewing Co. makes a series of barrel aged beers in 22oz bottles. Along with ingredients that speak to the community—local honey, mangos, rum—each label in the series is done by a Miami artist.
I was brought on for the label of “Bad Honey,” a barleywine ale aged in bourbon barrels with honey. And while its name is a reference to “Bad Bunny,” who was at the peak of his popularity, Veza Sur wanted to tap into (hehe) some of my botanical works. We also wanted it to feel and speak to the neighborhood.
About Veza Sur
Veza Sur is, in their words, "# HechaEnMiami focused on well crafted, flavorful and sessionable beers, perfect for Florida’s everlasting summer.” Their taproom and brewery is located in Miami’s Wynwood arts district, attracting the local hipsters and curious tourists alike.
Process
After some initial sketches, we landed on a couple of key visual motifs to highlight the beer's locality:
Honey
The main ingredient to this barrel-brew was a locally harvested orange blossom honey, which we wanted to highlight. These blossoms are used as the primary botanical motif on the label. (It was just a bonus that orange blossoms are Florida’s state flower.)

Art Deco
Color. Miami is rife with art deco vibes as part of its history and in new, throwback retro vibes. Hot pinks and blues are hallmarks of Miami’s art deco days and similarly take center stage in the Bad Honey label.
Typography. To tie it together, the text is hand-lettered and art deco inspired.
